*My children and I were given the Classroom Friendly Supplies Pencil Sharpener to review. Our opinions are our own and not influenced by anyone outside the family.*
When I was researching homeschool information last spring I kept running across bloggers reviewing the Classroom Friendly Supplies pencil sharpener. I logged in the back of my mind and continued to obsess on every schoolroom tour I could find. When it came time to purchase supplies I only bought a tiny hand held pencil sharpener. The reviews of the Classroom Friendly Supplies sharpener kept creeping into my head and I was too nervous to buy anything else!
This year has been one of transition for us. It is our first year homeschooling. With that we have switched curriculums a few times. I knew we needed to financially be okay with trying new programs, so I tried to reduce costs where I could. For 7 months we used the little handheld sharpener. In it’s defense, it is a decent sharpener for what it is really meant for, occasional use by an individual student. Any parent knows that for some reason, when your children reach school age, a pencil eating troll comes to live with you in your attic. He sneaks down and eats your children’s pencils the soon as they turn their head and you have to get a new one out if you want to move on with your day. Back to the topic at hand. The Murphy family was using the tiny blue handheld pencil sharpener and it was a sore point about 2-3 times a day.
My husband reached his limit.
My husband is a quiet man and rarely complains about anything. So when he does ask for something, he usually gets it and pretty quickly at that! I thought about the beautiful Classroom Friendly Supplies pencil sharpener again. I even had my color picked out. Red… I got on the website and saw that they sell for $24.99 + shipping. I thought, “not bad”. If you are still with me at this point, let me tell you, here is where I save you time and heartache. Thinking back on this moment, I feel like I am now watching a horror movie where you scream at the character, “don’t go in there!” Because what I did next was silly and it cost me time and money. I shopped around and looked to see if there was a sharpener that I could get locally that cost less. Yes. I did. I hang my head in shame, but I need to tell you my story in order for you not to follow down the very same path. I went to my local box store and bought an electric sharpener for $16.99. Brought it home and it wouldn’t sharpen pencils! It only half sharpened them! YES. It was then that I knew, if everyone is right and the Classroom Friendly Supplies pencil sharpener really did what everyone says it does it is the only pencil sharpener for me FOR LIFE.
I reached out to May at Classroom Friendly Supplies and asked if I could receive a sharpener in exchange for an honest review of the sharpener. I just had to see for myself if everyone was right! May was extremely gracious and sent me a shiny red sharpener almost immediately. When the box arrived, my husband was so excited that he opened it up right away. If only I could express how funny this act really was. He never gets involved in my bloggy packages, but he saw the sticker on the box and was more excited than I was!
On to the good stuff.
I appreciated that the packaging wasn’t excessive. That may sound weird, but I really get bummed out when companies over package a product, not only does it produce more waste, I know I as the consumer end up paying for that extra cost. I can’t show you the actual box that the sharpener came in because – the husband – and the excitement – and the opening of the box before I could get to it.
After we took the sharpener out and ohh-ed and ahh-ed we decided to put it to the test. Our handle was not attached completely. It’s okay. It is designed like that so you can replace the sharpener. We simply put the handle in place letting the notches guide us, screwed the black ring a few times and we were ready for action!
How to use the pencil sharpener:
1. Gently pull the silver plate out until it clicks.
2. Squeeze the black notches on the top of silver plate to insert pencil.
3. Turn handle until it doesn’t feel like there is resistance anymore. About 10-14 for a new pencil and about 4-5 for resharpening.
4. Gently squeeze the black notches on top of silver plate to release pencil.
5. Enjoy perfectly sharpened pencil!
*Optional – the sharpener comes with a clamp so you can attach it to a table. It requires no drilling and was very easy to figure out. We use the sharpener without the clamp so that we can move it out of the way when not in use. Our homeschool area is very compact, but it still did earn a place at the table.
We sharpened quite a few pencils to see if they really came out the same every time and they do! THIS sharpener is the one to buy. My husband couldn’t be any happier and my 10 year old said, “it really IS the best pencil sharpener ever!”
Give it to your friends a gift when their children start kindergarten or when they decide to homeschool. THIS is a teacher’s gift that they will actually love and benefit from every day. You can also purchase a 3 pack for $53.97. If you have 3 kids, that is less than $20 a teacher! They will love you for it. There is a serious bonding that happens over products that truly make our lives easier.
