Simple Homemade Foaming Soap

How to make homemade foaming soap for pennies! For more awesomeness visit

Does anybody else look at the word recipe and wonder if it is spelled correctly? I write that word often, but I still doubt myself and check it. I feel like it should be spelled differently. Maybe like receipt? Okay, sorry. Moving on!

I love foaming soap.

It saves time. I feel like the kids have a fighting chance to rid of some germs when they are washing and it FOAMS. What I did not like was the price. The foaming soap refills are smaller than traditional pump soap refills and they are about the same price! That just can’t be right. When you pick up the foaming soap bottle you can tell that it is more watery. (More watery… I’m sure that is a grammatical nightmare. Sorry) I have weird spending habits. For some things I do not mind spending top dollar and some things will drive me nuts to spend money on. Soap that the kids mostly play with ended up on my list of things I don’t like to spend money on. I switched back to regular soap because it was cheaper. Bar soap was a disaster and the regular pump soap was always found in dried up glops on the sink.

So I made the decision to go back to foaming soap, but I still had a refill bottle of the regular pump soap. I purchased the foaming soap dispensers and when it was time to refill them, I headed to the closet to try something out. I filled the dispenser about 1/4 of the way and filled the rest with warm water to dilute the soap. Once I shook it around, I tried to pump the soap out. I pumped it three times to make sure it wasn’t just left over soap in the pump. IT WORKED! Not only did it work, it felt thicker than the foam that came in the original packaging!

1/4 bottle of soap

3/4 warm water

Gently shake until mixed completely

I couldn’t believe it. It was one of those moments that you are sure you have discovered something fabulous.

My husband came home later that day and I asked him to try the soap. I received a suspicious look, but he played along. His reaction was one of surprise. He said, “Nice soap! Feels really rich, was it on sale?” When I told him I made it, he was impressed as well. We were both convinced that I had just invented the answer to world peace and I ran to Google to see if there were any recipes like this one. This was pre Pinterest, or what I like to call PP. None the less, about 3 recipes came up. Okay, so I wasn’t the first one to think of it, but we still thought I was pretty spiffy in my house. Most recipes call for about 2 Tablespoons of soap. My husband isn’t convinced that is enough soap, so I fill the bottle about 1/4 of the way up with a traditional soap refill and then fill the rest up with warm water. The trick is to fill the bottle slowly so that it doesn’t bubble too much.  There it is. Not completely earth shattering, but if it is new to you… your welcome.
