Picking The Perfect Business Partner

It’s funny really… how two people end up together.

No matter what you believe in, you have to believe that some higher power puts the people in your life that end up there.

I believe that everyone is in your life for a reason.

I have heard plenty of stories of partnerships going wrong in the past. Enough to say that I would never have a business partner. Until 2014 that is. In 2014, I entered two partnerships. So much for never.

The first is with my sister Vanessa for this blog. Working with family can go really well or it can horribly wrong. So far, we have lucked out and it has gone well. We keep the lines of communication open and although we have not said it, I believe that we would both easily walk away from any business we were in together in order to preserve our relationship as sisters. We are open and honest about what we need and most of all, provide grace to each other.

The second partnership I entered was with Allison Carter for the NC Blogger Network. A quick phone call and a few e-mails led to the relationship we have today. You can read our story here.

We didn’t know each other very well when we jumped into this venture together. From the outside, people with more “life experience” may have cringed. Had we ever worked together on a project? Not really. We have gotten to know each other more and more as each day passes. We learn and grow as partners with each conversation.  We have respect for each other and know how to laugh. We accept each other’s quirky parts just a easily as our best parts. It has worked from the beginning. From our very first 30 minute hangout together and keeps getting stronger every day.

So, how do you pick the perfect business partner?

LISTEN.

Listen to what God is telling you. There is an ease to the people that should be in your life and the paths that you should take. It simply feels right. There are honest conversations and a forthright manor that doesn’t come as often as we would all like. Does it mean that it is always easy? No. The conditions may not be, but the relationship is. If there is even a little bit of doubt, say “no”. Because when it is right. You will know.
