For as long as I remember I have wanted to be a Rock Star, Lawyer and Mom. In no particular order, just all three. 😉
I’m not a lawyer. I am a Rock Star in my own mind and I am definitely a Mom. As is life, there are good days, bad days, fabulous days, terrible days, days when you can not believe you are so happy and the days where you just need to curl up on the couch with a big bowl of ice cream a blanket and your favorite chic flick.
Often we get caught up in laundry and dirty floors. Bank account balances and what “friends” are saying on Facebook. I have a secret balancing tool in my cabinet. I didn’t intend for it to be that when I made it. I didn’t even know I was going to make it when I sat down to start.
When my son was a few months old, I made the best life balancing and parenting tool for myself without even planing it. I was living in Colorado at the time and my friend suggested we all go to a Paint Your Pot evening for a girls night out. It was my first time away from my son for “fun”. I chose a big cappuccino mug with the idea that I would use it for ice cream and hot chocolate. Not together of course. I had no design in mind. I just started to paint. While I was painting I started to think about what I wanted motherhood to look like. Different phrases started to come to me. As each one came into my mind, I painted them on the mug. They were like calm whispers. Each one made me smile.Say YES as often as possible
Hug trees together
Say no when necessary
Remember how little they are
Say I love you
Your dreams are already coming true
I wrote these phrases in the exact order that I listed them. I didn’t realize then that this would become my blueprint for motherhood. I didn’t realize that this is what I would strive for.
Of course I have bad days. When I get frustrated with the toys on the floor. Another ding in the walls. SOCKS EVERYWHERE.
At the end of the day, I grab my mug fill it up with some ice cream and focus on the words.
Does it work every single time? Nope.
Does it work 95% of the time? Yup.
It helps me remember that I CHOSE this life and I am pretty darn lucky. So are YOU.
We live in a great place, have incredible amenities, and have the free will to be whoever we want to be.
Do you have something that brings you back to your center? I would love to hear about it in the comments!
